SYR #9 Welcome to another show of So You’re Renovating! cottage edition. This is the eight week of heavy renovations. We are progressing very well and we invite you to join us every week to follow the evolution of the minimalist pro-environmental country home. If you just logged on, you need to know that this house was almost just a cabin that we lifted up with crane to redo the foundations. We have added an extra floor, in reinforced concrete, reconstructed the third floor from the old cottage, re did the roof added seven skylights, replaced all doors amd windows, insulated, built interior partition, plumbing, electricity, ventilation, installed fabulous minimalist style shower, bathtub, hard wood floors ceramic tiles…. Hey talking of cermamic, today, we will construct a cermaic tile shower. Okay, let’s not loose anytime and let me present our Handy-friends for this week’s show. They are……… By the way, we have a little contest here. You can go to the So You’re Renovating.com and vote for your preferred handy-friend. The handy friend that collects more vote will win at the end of the series the help of our renovation team to renovate:……… is own place. Retrospective 30 sec. Last week retrospective 30 sec. Last week we saw Ross apply the finishing paint and plumb a little. Also, Darlene tiled the kitchen floor And finally, Kim installed hard-wood floors. Despite of the apprehension, our handy-hosts have been quite successful and I can’t wait to see how you guys are goin to perform. What do you say! Job assignment : A/ Construction of a cermamic tile shower B/ Install a minimalist style frameless tempered glass shower C/ install urban medecine cabinets D/Apply he grout for the kitchen cemramic floor that Darlene install ast week. Alternative : Install lights in the fire place mantel and ventilation register. Install skylights accessories A/ Construction of a ceramic shower Shluter system Ceramic showers are very popular these days. Usually, unexpereinced contrators will constuct a ceramci shower on a mortar bed on which he will then lay down the tiles. The problem with this type of installation is that the mortar of the grout between the tiles are not perfectly watertight. With time, water and small particules will infiltrate the mortar bed and contaminate the whole base. This explain mildrew traces and odors you find in many cermamic shower. When that happens, the only solution is demolition!!! The best way to construct such shower is to use a kit that has every thing you need to build a waterproof, maintenance free shower, without having to do a mortar bed. And it is with great pleasure that we introduce Mr. Sylvain Racine , representative form the company Shcluter system. Mr Racine will guide our handy friend trough the complete construction of the ceramic tile shower. The shower tray is already pre-sloped Lay down the tray to trace the opening for the drain. Once the hole for the drain is done, apply mortar on the ground and put down the tray. Make sure all the surface of the tray is well in contact with the mortar. The we apply a vapour retardant membrane on the walls to prevent the vapour from migrating into the wall. If vapour does migrate into the wall, it will condense and then cause rot, mold and stucture damage. Now we can install a layer of mortar on the tray and the drain. Once this is done, It is the time to build the contours or the shower base. We apply the membrane on the contours and the base for a perfect watertight shower. We can install joint edges in the interior corners so there is no need for silicone. Silicone can collect black stains after a while. And we can install the ceramic tiles. On the outside corners we can install a protection edge for a perfect finish. The drain supplied with the kit facilitates a lot the installation of the ceramic tiles. I want to draw you attention on the shower valve and the faucet. In this batroom, they needed to be install ed behing the walls with no access, once renovations are completed. We suggest in this case that you opt for high quality fixtures you can trust. Tip Billboard : Moen Logo Remember, fixtures can add a lot of style to your freshly renovated bathroom. Fixtures from the new ShowHouse ™ line offer exceptional design with superior quality and service. B/Urban Shower. Two weeks ago we saw Valery install this beautyful minimalist style shower. Then, Karine tiled the walls and we are now ready to install the frameless glass panels and the door. Once this done, we will be able to finish the ceilling around the roof. Note that we can only finish the ceilling onec the galss panels are in place since we will need to slightly lift the roof to install the panels. You must be two persons to lift and carry the glass panels so :……………… will assist you for this job. You will need a pen, rubing aclohol, to clean the glass and of course some silicone. O.K, You’re all set : GO First locate and mark on the edge of the shower base where the horinzontal u-channel will be installed. Installed them in place using the double-face tape. Then install the vertical u-channel in place along the wall of the shower. You can then put the first glass panel in place making sure it is leveled using the appropriate setting blocs. Check if the glass panel is leveled then remove it and apply a bead of silicone between the two setting blocks. Do not apply silicone on the setting blocks. Install the horinzontal u-channel on top of the glass panel, between the glass panel and the roof. Cut the u-channle if needed. Now install the hinges on the side panel making sure that the gaskets are on each side of the glass. Insert setting blocks in between the glass and the hinges. Clean well the glass panel edges and install the seal with double-face tape. Install the door onto the hinges and insert the setting blocks between the hinges and the glass. Assemble the door knob and install the seal and the drip shield. Complete the installation of the other horizontal u-channels and the second verticla u-channel. Install the other glass panels making sure they are leveled using the setting blocks each time. Finish the glass panels assembly with the 90 degrees glass clip. Finaly, install the support bar by attaching it to the wall and onto the glass panel with the glass mount. The Urban Shower is trendy with urban, minimalist style. With two dimensions 72 x 42 ince and 60 x 36 inch, the urban shower are crafted with pure lines and simple forms. They are offered with the MAAX Integrated Energizing System and the Rainmax tropical rainmaker for an invigorating experience. This ingenious factory-assembled system offers no-hassle installation and a guaranteed energy surge There you go you only need to adjust the door using the different setting blocks and to install the threshold. Wow super, I have a vision! Note that you need to apply silicone on the outside, between the u-channels and the glass and between the u-channles and the acrylic. Inside, you only need a silicone joint between the two glass panles forming the 90 degree angle. Finaly, we can remove the plastic film protecting the shower base. It did earn it’s break! Tips billboard : Maax Logo The Urban Shower is trendy with urban, minimalist style It is crafted with pure lines and simple forms. The MAAX Integrated Energizing System and the Rainmax tropical rainmaker are factory-assembled and offer no-hassle installation. They are guaranteed energy surge C/The Urban medecine cabinets Okay, now to complete this amazing minimalist style shower and this amazing minimalist style bathub, we need to install nothing else but an amazing minimalist style medecine cabinet ! First yo need to position the cabinet on the wall at the desired location and trace a lign underneath. You install the bracket on the mark and attach it to the wall in the studs or with plastic shields. You can hide the screws with the screw caps for a pefect finish. Install the top brackets into the groove on the top of the cabinet. Put the cabinet in place against the wall on the bottom braket and slide the top brackets in front of a wall studs to screw them in place. All what’s left to do is to install the shelves and the doors. You adjust the doors by loosening or tightning the screw on the mounting plates. Once all the tiles are in place, wait 24 hours for the mortar to dry. Then, spread out the grout on the joints with a rubber trowel. Press the grout firmly and completely into the joints. Don’t apply mortar around the tiled surface. Use silicone caulk instead;or ideally a profile like this one. it will resist to expanding movements. Remove the excess mortar on the tile surface with a dampened sponge, and then with a clean cloth as you go along One thing we want to add is that you should try to mix all the grout you need in one batch to prevent differences in the color. Tips Billboard Logo Ceramax Remember : Do not apply grout around the tiled surface. Use silicone caulk instead;or ideally profiles that will resist to expanding movements. Info As you’ve seen, a vapor barrier is also useful in the attic when it’s installed on the inner, warm side of the insulation. For it to be fully effective though, all drafts in the different parts of the house structure must be eliminated, especially those around doors or windows. This is an important step in making sure your home is airtight. However, obtaining a 100% draftproofed house is impossible. Let’s just say that the more your house will be airtight, the better off it will be. 6/ Foam backer rod CF 12082 Whether it is for a new construction, a renovation or a repair, a foam backer rod will be useful as a support surface for sealing and caulking. You will save time and money. A foam backer rod will be especially useful before caulking bathrooms tubs, showers, kitchen counters and sinks. It can also be used for cement repairs on patio or sidewalk cracks, foundation cracks, driveway cracks and swimming pool foundations. A foam backer rod will be mandatory for pre-sealing window, door frames, vents, duct-work and plumbing openings. Note that this foam won’t rot and it will stay flexible. 15/ Transparent interior weatherstrip tape CF 13020 To make a window completely airtight, you can use a transparent interior weatherstrip tape. The installation of such a tape will be very efficient. However you won’t be able to open the windows as long as the tape is in place. 16/Caulking cord CZ 76040 If you have to seal a joint or a crack permanently, a good solution is a caulking cord. It is very easy to install specially in tight and irregular places. It represents a practical alternative to the caulking gun. This caulking cord is also efficient to waterproof around sinks. Interviews : Last week we saw Kim install superb oak floors. We will now meet one of the company representative to talk about this pro-environmental choice. Eco Nordik hard wood floor. The cootage here was in part renovated using reinforced concrete for foundation, exterio walls and even all the floors! Why, we wil ask that question to the person most interested and hopefully interesting : Gerry. Gerry owns an insulating concrete form company and firmly belive that concrete homes are by far superior constuction. Concrete homes.
