#11 V-O missing for show #10 13/20 Tips Billboard. Logo Primeau Water that is not carried off towards the proper areas through the gutter system, will cause important damages to your home. Preferably choose a gutter structure whose backside is higher than its front side. If ever there is overflowing, water will leak over the front of the gutter and not against the cornice. Moreover, this type of design molds the slope of the roof. Finally, choose interlocking, pre-drilled gutters for a quick and easy installation. This will help you save time and money. Intro Manquantes de Stéphane en anglais show #6 chemises carrotée verte. Welcome to another show of So You’re Renovating! cottage edition. This is the eleventh week of heavy renovations. If you just logged on, you need to know that this house was almost just a cabin that we lifted up with crane to redo the foundations. We have added an extra floor, in reinforced concrete, reconstructed the third floor from the old cottage, re did the roof added seven skylights, replaced all doors and windows, insulated, built interior partition, plumbing, electricity, ventilation, installed fabulous minimalist style shower, bathtub, hard wood floors ceramic tiles re-built all balconies and a floatting deck. Today we are about to start the installation of a magnificent kitchen created by the famous designer Jean Claude Poitras. Okay, let’s not loose anytime and let me present our Handy-friends for this week’s show. They are……… Retrospective 30 sec. Last week retrospective 30 sec. Last week we saw Massimo install a suberb tempered glass shower door. Also, Marjorie applied stain on the beautifull hardwood interior doors. Finally, Daphné cut ceramic tiles and installed different accessories for the skylights and the fireplace. Despite of their apprehension, our handy-hosts have been quite successful and I can’t wait to see how you guys are going to perform. What do you say! By the way, we have a little contest here. You can go to the So You’re Renovating.com and vote for your preferred handy-friend. The handy friend that collects more vote will win at the end of the series the help of our renovation team to renovate:……… is own place. Job assignment : A/ The installation of the kitchen from the reknowned designer Jean Claude Poitras B/ Install brand new cabinets in the bathroom C/ Install screens on the gutters and a few other suprises. Alternative : Install a toilet bowl Install door knobs Clean windows Install Wenge panels around the bathub Interview : Solar energy Info : Weatherstrips A/ The Jean Claude Poitras Kitchen: To install these suberb kitchen cabinets design by Jean Claude Poitras the first thing you need to do is to remove all doors and drawers. Only when the installation is complete will the cabinet doors and drawers be reset. Now we need to install the levelors. These replace the old cedar wedges when it comes to leveling the cabinets. There are very handy… Next, we need to locate the highest point in the floor where you want to install the cupboards. Make a mark on the wall. From this mark, draw a horizontal, leveled line that corresponds to your cupboard’s height. Following this reference line, locate the wall studs with a finishing nail or an electronic detector. Usually, wall studs are found every 40 cm center to center. Put the first cupboard in place. The first cupboard is the most important one. It must be absolutely leveled otherwise all the others will be crooked. Adjust the cupboard level with the levelors underneath Use the levelors to adjust and level the second cupboard. When the two cupboards are screwed together, make the necessary adjustments to the second cupboard and screw it in permanently in the wall studs. Proceed the same way for every other cupboard. Each time, fix the cupboard you are working on to the one before with vise grips. Once the two cupboards are aligned, screw them in. Write out the horizontal reference line on the width of the next cupboard. Draw a vertical leveled line and put up the cupboard by setting it against both lines. Finally, put the next cupboard in place and repeat the same installation steps. O.K. I am leaving you…. But I will be back after I make sure the others are not completely out of control.. Jean Claude Poitras is one of North America`s most celebrated fashion designers for 30 years. Most recently, Mr. Poitras has widened his attention to focus on lifestyle objects. Inspired by the latest and best of European home design trends, Mr. Poitras has also concentrated energy on designing the heart of the home itself- the kitchen. Working in alliance with Maax, he has now created one of North America’s most efficient, forward looking and handsome line of contemporary kitchens. In his words : ``Places of convivial graciousness as well as highly efficient machines for living`` The basic ingredients : Logic, Ergonomics, Technology The à la carte spices : nuanced exotic woods tinted and textured glass types. And finaly, lacquer colors Special features : Deep, wide engineered drawers Upward-opening cabinet doors Light-looking, texture adding, less-is-more glass Hey super, I am impressed by your work an by the kitchen. We can appreciate the minimalist style, simple and pure lines that will integrate perfectly with the style of the house. And it is durable with all the stainless steel drawers and doors… Now you just need to slide in the shelf support fixtures, and then the shelves. Put the cabinet doors back on and slide the drawers back inside. If necessary, adjust the cabinet doors with screws designed for this purpose. This type of cupboard only requires three screws for an impeccable finish. Tips Billboard : Logo Maax Remember that these Jean Claude Poitrs kitchens differenciates themselves by Beautifull nuanced exotic woods Subtly tinted and textured glass types. Lacquer colors that depicts as passionate as tropical fruit and tranquil as northern landscapes. C/ Gutter screen installation Last week we met with the Primeau brigade, the gutter specialists that showed us how to properly install gutters. Now, when it comes to maintenance, the only thing we need to do with high end gutters like these is to protect them from dead leaves and other debris. The solution is to install screens like this one that you can find in any home renovation centre. You need to slide the screen underneath the asphalt single and then snap it onto the gutter like this. That is it!!! One precision here. Always be very careful when you work near the roof. The ladder should be well tied up at the top and at the bottom. Do no take any chances.….. The leaf guard should be robust. It should also follow the slope of the roof and ease under the shingles. The fact that the leaf guard follows the slope of the roof is very important. Otherwise, the ice and the snow as they slide off the roof could tear the gutter down. Leaves can get stuck instead of naturally be swept away by the wind. The accumulation of leaves between the roof and the gutter can stop the water and create many problems. Note that in the wintertime it is not necessary to remove steel gutters as they are very resistant. Anyway, as our weather is forever changing, you’ll never know if it’s going to rain or snow. Well-installed, resistant gutters require minimum maintenance. 8/23 Tips Billboard. Logo Primeau You must make sure that your gutters are free of any leaves. This is why it is essential to install a leaf guard, especially if you live in a wooded area. The leaf guard should be robust. It should also follow the slope of the roof and ease under the shingles. Note that in the wintertime it is not necessary to remove steel gutters as they are very resistant. 9/22 Is storage space in your bathroom insufficient ? Are your cabinets simply out-of-date ? Putting up new cabinets is simple and involves the same techniques as for kitchen cupboards. In fact, it’s possible to assemble and install bathroom cabinets in just a few minutes. But because we like challenges, we decided to go with state of the art minimalist style exotic wenge up lifted bathroom cabinets. One particularity of these cabinets that brings a lots of style is that they are above the floor without any contact. We will need to reinforced the wall because of the weight. Consider the weight of the cabinet, the hard surface counters that will be installed, the sinks, the faucets and the water when the sinks are filled up. To do so, we need to open up the wall. Remove a piece of gypsum. If it is remove properly, we will be able to repair the opening quite easily. We will use half-inch thick plywood to reinforce the wall. That is it for the wall reinforcement. Now to install the cabinet, we will draw a level horizontal line. We will install the first cabinet on the wall along the line. Then we will install the second cabinet by screwing it to the first and then to the wall and so on… That is it!!! D/ Toilet bowl installation Unfortunately, when you renovate, even if you do the most expensive bathroom renovation in the wold, you will have to go through the next steps : install a toilet bowl. The most important piece is the wax ring. It is more fun to install then to remove, believe me…. It is in fact this strange element that makes a toilet bowl watertight! It is placed between the toilet bowl and the drain and when compressed, it forms a tigh seal. But first we need to install the floor flenge. This flenge will secure the bowl into place. Did you know that each of us consumes an average of 450 liters of water a day!!!! This is a good reason why we only install 7 liters toilet bowl. Seven litrers is enough water. No questions. The toilet equipped with 13 liters tanks only waste water every time you flush. That is seven liters of clean drinkable water you waste everytime. Now if your toilet is equipped with such big 13 liter tank and that you are not about to change it, you can use a platic bottle filled up with water and place it in the tank. You will reduce the quantity of wasted water without even noticing any difference. E/ Door knob installation To complete these suberb hardwood interior doors, we chose stainless steel satin finsish door knob along with nickel satin and chrome satin. Once again, these door knobs show pure lines and delicate simplicity that fit perfectly with the minimalist style we are working on. Ideally, when changing or installing door knobs, you should try to keep the same style troughout the house for good continuity. When it comes to the installation, it is very simple specially when the openings on the door is already pre-cut like this one. You just need to use the supplied template to locate where you need to dirve the hole for the latch. Be carefull to dirve the hole perfectly perpendicular with the door. Next we use a wood chisel to install the strike…… Tip Billboard : Logo Weiser. Remember that is it better to install the same line of door knob in your home. These door kobs are available in different finishes to match and personalized any décor. And they come with a lifetime warranty! E/ Installing the wenge panels for the Urban Tub. To dress the surrounding dwarf walls of our minimlist Urban Tub, our design Marie-Claude Vallée has had a genius idea. To use the same wenge exotic wood that the cabinets are made of. Now that is what we call style ! But we have on more little challenge. We need to keep an access to the motors and other accessories underneath the tub as it is often the case for any whirpool. We will use small magnets like these one especially conceived for this purpose to construct a seemless, hingeless access door. F/Clean the windows. OK. You, you will clean the windows now! In any renovation project, cleaning the windows will be on the list when all the hard work is over. The thing you should know is that most paper towel won’t work because they usually leave traces behind. Lets ask a real professionnel what to do. Yes, that is it. You need a squedgee! A rasor blade such as this one is aslo welcomed but DO NOT use the little green scrubber for dishes or steel wool. It would sratch the glass surface. Now that you have the right technique : go on, we are looking at you… Weatherstrips To reduce you energy consumption, all drafts in the different parts of the house structure must be eliminated, especially those around doors and windows. This is an important step in making sure your home is airtight. However, obtaining a 100% draftproofed house is impossible. Let’s just say that the more your house will be airtight, the better off it will be. Doors and windows might need weather-strips. In some cases, existing weather-strips are replaceable. There are many kinds of weather-strips: a V-strip or a spring, depending on where you plan to install them. Your retailer has several kinds of strips that will suit your specific needs. The first thing you should check on a window to make sure it has a good thermal efficiency is the weatherstripping. You can make that verification once a year went you clean the windows. Make sure to find all the weather strips on the window. Then take one or several samples and get the exact same new product. Some examples of weatherstripping are, to name just a few: A grey replacement joint “T Shape” for aluminum windows A taupe replacement joint fir tree shape for wooden doors A white replacement joint arrow shape for windows A replacement joint universal for doors and windows Simply replace the old weatherstrip by sliding the new one in the appropriate channel. A very common weatherstripping for windows is a replacement joint . One big advantage to change them all is the new fin-seal that has been added. This polypropylene fin seal increases the performance of the weatherstripping. You will find this type of weatherstripping on sliding windows and patio doors. Again, they are very easy to install: just slide out the existing strip, measure and cut the replacement, slide the new strip back into the channel. Note that these weatherstripping come in four different sizes. Good weatherstrippings offer several advantages. They eliminate air leaks and make you save on heating and air conditioning bills. They reduce cold air, wind, dust, rain and condensation. They improve noise barrier and thermal insulation They will not rot or develop mildew. Other handy weatherstrips are: 1/Weatherstripping on aluminum frame 1.1/Magnetic weatherstripping for steel doors 3/ Self-adhesive V weatherstrip for doors and sliding windows Finally, don’t forget the doorsweep. You can find doorsweep that will fit your door in most home renovation center. For exemple, you might need : A Polymer and aluminum doorsweep or a Polymer and aluminum bumper threshold Remember that You can go to the So You’re Renovating.com and vote for your preferred handy-friend. The handy friend that collects more vote will win at the end of the series the help of our renovation team to renovate:……… is own place. General pro-Environment segment We wanted to renovate a country house to put the highlight on the environment. Our homes play a very important part in the way we live and consume. Homes affect our energy consumption, waste production, and pretty much everything else. Your home, the way it is built, the material that were used, its design and its style all play a decisive role on your behavior. Make sure that when you renovate, you take these transformations as an opportunity to improve your energy efficiency, reduce your waste and recycle. When you think renovations, think environmentally friendly
