We went to visit a plan to find out how these new membrane where fabricated.
Bitumen is known for its ability to prevent water infiltration, but it must be modified to resist temperature fluctuations and aging and to remain elastic, even at low temperatures. This is why S.B.S. elastomer is added to the bitumen when manufacturing the membranes. S.B.S. stands for Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene. The elastomer provides very great elasticity and thus excellent resistance to shifting of the underlying support due to extreme temperature fluctuations. Aging of the bitumen also slows down considerably, allowing it to conserve its original properties longer.
In addition to bitumen and elastomer, membranes may also contain a fiberglass mat or polyester reinforcment, which enhances mechanical resistance.
The difference between oxidized asphalt used to manufacture asphalt paper or shingles, and elastomeric bitumen is in fact the elastomer. The oxidized asphalt can break and crack very easily in cold weather or when the temperature fluctuates.

One of the most unfortunate and frequent problems in Canadian homes is cracked concrete foundations. These cracks occur when the concrete foundation is of poor quality, or when water infiltration causes damage over time.
To dam up a crack in the foundation, you must tackle the root of the problem by checking the exterior wall. Dig to uncover the crack completely, right up to the footing if necessary.
Carefully clean the concrete surface so as to remove all traces of dirt. To make the crack absolutely waterproof, you can use an elastomeric bitumen membrane. Apply the primer using a paintbrush or a roller. Let it dry. The primer is dry when it’s sticky but won’t soil easily. The drying time for primer on concrete is approximately half an hour. Fill in the crack with the appropriate type of sealant. As you’re removing the protection sheet, apply the base membrane on the crack. Make sure it extends 10 cm on each side of the crack. Apply pressure on the whole surface of the membrane with a hard roller to promote adherence. Finally, apply a sealant joint around the membrane to complete the job.

To waterproof a crack in the foundation, you must tackle the root of the problem and look to the exterior wall.
Remember that a waterproof membrane bears high resistance to tearing.

We believe that a trained professional installer is good value in terms of your investment, and essential to achieving the look that you expect. And we recommend that you work closely with a certified kitchen and bath designer to co-ordinate the installation with a trained countertop fabricator.
The installation kit for an undermount sink should include a masonite template that is supplied by the manufacturer. This template will be used to cut the sink opening in the countertop, and has been precisely machined so that the sink will integrate perfectly with the countertop.
The sink installation hardware kit will include brackets and clamps to secure the sink to the underside of the countertop. This hardware kit will reinforce the adhesive bond that has been established with silicone sealant. And it is the silicone sealant that provides a watertight barrier between the sink rim and the countertop.

To properly insulate an exterior wall, it has to be repaired; all the holes must be sealed off using appropriate caulking material.

When the structure has been cleaned and repaired, you can move on to insulating the designated area.
To insulate the wall properly, you should look up your local building codes to achieve the necessary R-values. Insulation is measured in terms of thermal resistance. R is the value, RSI the value by international standards. The higher the R-value is, the more effective the insulation will be. In general, exterior walls should have a minimum thermal resistance of R20. The ceiling immediately under the roof: R32, the basement walls: R13, and the floors over an unheated area: R27.
Fiberglass insulation has a thermal resistance value of approximately R3,2 for every one-inch-thick layer. This material is effective, economical and ideal for insulating areas between the wall studs and the sheathing. It is manufactured in a variety of sizes capable of fitting your stud-framed wall with 3,5 inches blankets of R12 for a 2 by 4 frame; of 6 inches of R20 for a 2 by 6 frame, and 10 inches of R32 for a 2 by 10 frame. To cut through the fiberglass, use a straight-edged board and a utility knife. Use the board to compress the insulation and cut through; you will obtain a neat and precise line. When handling fiberglass, always wear a long sleeves and trousers, gloves and protection goggles. Insulate the holes in between the structure beams without packing down the fiberglass too much. Fiberglass is effective because it retains air. If it is too much compressed, its R value decreases. Friction maintains fiberglass insulation in place. Make sure no cold air can circulate behind the insulation. This can sometimes happen when the insulation blanket is too wide.
When it comes to your basement walls, the choice of insulation material depends on the wall configuration. If the walls are really straight and have no irregularities, rigid insulation boards can be used.

Remove every little imperfection. Measure the height of the wall and install the leveled boards. Easy to put up, rigid insulation boards are attached to the wall by metal channels that fit in the grooves of the boards. The boards fit into each other and eliminate cold bridges. Use concrete screws to fix the metal channels to the wall. The gypsum panels will then be screwed unto the wall using the channels. This way of proceeding will help you save space. It is not necessary to install a vapor barrier with rigid, extruded polystyrene boards. This insulation has a thermal resistance of R5 per inch. Although you don’t need a wood structure for this, it is possible to install 5cm of insulation for a total R10 value. Use expandable polyurethane foam to fill in the empty spaces. Install the rigid insulation boards on the exterior walls, all around the basement. Polystyrene is combustible. It must be immediately covered with gypsum panels after it is installed. Insulate the spaces between the ceiling joists this way. Use fiberglass pieces that you will then cover up with a polyethylene film. Seal off everything with acoustic sealant. Pipes should never run through exterior walls. However, if no other alternative is possible, install the pipes on the inner, warm side of the insulation. Cut through the boards starting from a groove and install the pipes in the groove. Complete the job by applying polyurethane foam.

Putting up rigid insulation boards is a very interesting option for basement renovation. The panels are very moisture-resistant: this is a plus for basement walls since, as you now know, humidity can seep right through them.
As we just saw, products equipped with metal channels are ingenious and make installing gypsum boards a very simple and quick process.
Lack of ventilation in the attic is one of the main causes of unhealthy environments and house deterioration. In fact, it’s very simple: in wintertime, a roof must be - and must stay - cold. If the attic is not ventilated properly, then hot air stemming from the rooms of the house accumulates in the attic, and there is a greater risk for condensation.

It can be a good idea to take advantage of the roofing repairs to correct any ventilation problems in the roof. Adequate ventilation is essential. Even the warranty of shingles depends on it. In wintertime, air circulation can prevent moisture-high air from accumulating and condensing under the roof deck, causing roofing materials to rot. In summertime for example, roof ventilation can help stop shingles from overheating, becoming pustulant, (blistered) deformed or curled. This improvement may help stretch the life of your shingles. A ratio of 1 square foot of free vent opening for each 300 square feet of attic floor is generally required for traditional roofs, while a 1/150 ratio suits slow- slope roofs (1/6 to 1/3) as well as roofs over cathedral-style ceilings. Vents should be distributed this way: (approximately) 55% downwards in soffits for air intake, and 45% at rooftop for letting air out. Note that a roof can never be « too ventilated ». However, don’t start drilling holes everywhere.
As we just saw, great attic ventilation doesn’t mean drilling holes anywhere and everywhere. To promote healthy air circulation, try to create a « chimney effect » by drawing cool air inside through vents in eaves and evacuating hot stale air outside through ridge vents, at the top of the roof.

Hot and humid attic air is lazy and has a tendency to collects at the top of the roof. Even a small, poorly ventilated area in the attic can imprison hot air and cause problems. It is essential to create a whole-house ventilating system and use soffit ventilators to let cool air flow in and then out through an exit in the upper section of the roof. Hot air and moisture will be naturally dispersed when it rises and exits through the ridge vents. This is referred to as « the chimney effect ». Here, it is precisely at the top of the roof that the materials are starting to rot, simply because hot and humid air had no way to escape. To solve this problem, you can use eaves, soffit or gable ventilators, or a combination of these uniformly distributed on all faces of the roof. This way, in the winter or in the summertime, these ventilators will evacuate hot air outside. It is strongly recommended to install rafter vents between the eaves rafters to provide a cool air passage. It is very important to leave a gap at least 8cm wide between the attic insulation and roof deck materials for the air to flow freely. The net surface of free vent opening must be calculated by taking into account any obstructions such as wire or grillwork.
In order to properly ventilate the cornice, you need to install the right soffits.
Never close the underside of the cornice with a material that limits air circulation. Important problems could then arise in the attic.
Instead choose soffits that are specifically designed for this purpose, preferably aluminum soffits with double ventilation. This is a soffit system that successfully combines a better ventilated aluminum soffit with primalum steel fascia, flashing, J trim etc… This type of soffit allow 450 square cm of ventilation per square meter. (8 square inches per square foot) It helps prevent ice accumulation on the roof and protects the eavestroughs against ice dams.
Because they are made in aluminum, they can easily be cut with metal cissors. They provide a brand new look to the cornice. Finally, aluminum will not collet dust like PVC and will stay nice and clean for many years to come.
Soffits are very easy to install and you can do it alone. You can find the right soffit at your local home improvement center.

Remember that soffits provide vital air circulation in your attic.
Always make sure the nails are straight and even to avoid making the fascia buckle. A house without drip edges, or whose drip edges are not installed properly, is vulnerable to water spilling behind the gutter and causing the eaves to rot.
Now we can discuss the main part of the system: the gutter. Three very important factors must be taken into account: the conception, the design, and the materials with which the gutters are built.
Some materials, like plastic and aluminum, are very sensitive to temperature fluctuations and tend to expand. However, too much expansion can cause the gutter to buckle and the joints to leak.
In Canada, as we enjoy beautiful extreme temperatures, prepare for snow and ice accumulations. Gutters made out of fragile materials such as plastic and aluminum are not recommended. You will need a robust and solid gutter system if you don’t want the whole thing to come apart! Gutters must be strong enough to support a ladder, otherwise you will have to make repairs each time you want to climb on your roof. We thus recommend you to use steel gutters.
Beware of gutters shaped on site. They are usually built with light, portable equipment that can’t shape heavy duty. Also, portable equipment can’t be used for innovative gutter designs. Speaking of design options, you should choose a gutter structure whose backside is higher than its front side. In the event of an overflow, water would leak over the front of the gutter and not against the cornice. Another great characteristic is that this type of design molds the slope of the roof. This way, leaves, snow, ice and other debris will fall naturally instead of being held back by the gutter. Finally, with this type of design, you can position the nails from the bottom up. This is important as it allows the water to flow naturally along the nails and into the gutter.
3/The last important fact you should consider is whether the gutter system you’re planning to install is simple. The more accessories it requires, the more expensive the system will be. And this does not necessarily mean the system will be more effective. In fact, the most simple gutter system will be easy to put up and accessible to everyone.
Choose a telescopic gutter which eavestroughs parts fit in each other. You will not need any fittings, brackets, brackets screws etc... This way, you will benefit from a better gutter system at a lower cost.
You can find that type of gutter at your local home center. It is a great do it yourself project.

A roof flashing is required when the chimney passes through the roof. Several types of flashing are available to adapt to the full range of roof pitches.
A chimney must have a termination cap, otherwise corrosion problems may occur.
It may happen that the chimney is surrounded by a chimney chase. In that case the chimney exits must be placed at a minimum of 18 inches above the chimney chase.

If there are 2 or more chimneys in the chase or above the roof , the exits must be at least 16 inches horizontally and 18 inches vertically apart from each other. This is recommended to prevent smoke to go from an operating hearth to one not in operation.
Once the installation of the chimney is completed, you can attach it to the appliance.
Security Chimneys have developped a safer double wall black stove pipe tested to 1150 C or 2100 F and listed as 6 inches clearance from combustible materials. The inside wall is made of corrosion resistant stainless steel. The double wall provides better protection of the exterior finish.
The outer wall of the double wall black stove pipe features a series of openings allowing you to recover a maximum of heat from the flue gases. For an easier installation, the double wall black stove pipe is telescopic and extends from 42inches to 66 inches.
Once the installation of your chimney is completed, maintenance is very important.
Initially, inspect your chimney weekly. From this you will learn how often it will be necessary to clean your chimney.
It should be inspected at least once every 2 months during the heating season to determine if a creosote or soot build up has occurred. If creosote or soot has accumulated, it should be removed to reduce the risk of chimney fire.
Have your chimney cleaned by a qualified chimney sweep.

Esthetically, the Bis Ultima has an elegant and sophisticated look. The European cast iron, single door gives an unobstructed view of the fire. It is offered in two styles: Victorian or Contemporary in 24k gold plate, nickel or black.
For safety and optimum heat transfer, the door window is made of ceramic glass. It has an efficient air wash system that keeps the glass clean.
Other features like decorative louvres add to its beauty. The textured refractory lined firebox recreates a traditional masonry appearance.
The Bis Ultima is very performant. Its maximum heat efficiency is 72%. It can heat up to 1500 square feet and give up to 55,000 btu/hr.

The Bis Ultima is an energy efficient, heat circulating close combustion fireplace. You will receive a lifetime of comfort and enjoyment from your fireplace, provided it is installed, maintained and operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
First, to determine the best location to install your fireplace, you have to consider the location of the windows, doors and the traffic flow in the room where the fireplace will be installed.
If possible, you should choose a location where the chimney will pass through the house without cutting floor or roof joists.
Usually, no additional floor support is needed for the fireplace. Check the floor construction and consult your local building code to determine if additional support is needed.
The Bis Ultima can be installed directly on the floor or on a raised base. It may be installed directly on a combustible floor, however, the floor in front of the fireplace must be covered with a non-combustible material ( tile, marble, stone etc...).
Frame the fireplace using 2” x 3” or heavier lumber. Frame the fireplace with vertical studs at the side of it, running from floor to ceiling. Position the studs back from the front edge of the fireplace.
Do not use combustible material in the space directly above the fireplace, except for the studs above the façade that support the facing and mantel.
The mantel must be installed at least 45 inches above the base of the fireplace.
Two different hot air ducting systems can be installed with the Bis Ultima: Gravity Kit or Forced Air Kit.
When in operation, the fireplace requires fresh air for combustion and draws air out of the house. It may starve other fuel burning appliances such as gas or oil furnace. As well, exhaust fans may compete for air causing negative pressure in the house resulting in smoke entering the house from the fireplace. This situation is aggravated in modern airtight houses. To overcome this problem, it is strongly recommended that you install an outside air intake.
All of Security Chimneys International and Bis products are connected directly to the chimney using the Twist Lock system. Most other fireplaces certified for use with the Secure Temp Asht+ chimney can also be installed directly or with an anchor plate.
An anchor plate is also available for connecting other types of fireplaces including masonry units.
like the Secure Temp 2100+, the Secure Temp ASHT+ is a stainless steel, double wall chimney lined with Secura Plus 2 insulation between the walls.
The exterior wall carries the structural load. It is a chimney of superior quality. the insulation keeps the surface of the outer casing’s temperature relatively low.
The minimum security space is only 2 inches from the combustible materials, regardless of the chimney’s diameter.
The Secure Temp ASHt+ is a lightweight chimney, for example, the 6 inches diameter chimney weighs only 5.2 pounds each linear foot and it can be installed by a single worker. For this demonstration, we will be using a Secure Temp S-2100+ chimney instead.
Place the first section of the chimney on the fireplace. Rotate 1/4 of a turn clockwise in order to lock it.
From below, install a firestop plate in each floor through which the chimney will pass. In the case of an attic, install a firestop plate from below and an attic radiation shield from above.
Once you have reached the desired height, put in place the roof support and proceed to the installation the same way as seen before.
Concerning the use of your new Bis Ultima fireplace, as it is common with airtight stoves, it is the combustion air control that sets the flow of oxygen feeding the flames. This allows for a more precise control of the fire. You will find the control handle under the door at the left. Moving the handle sideways will modify the air feeding.
Pulling the air combustion control handle will induce a boost at the base of the fire allowing an easier fire start up. It can be pushed back once the fire is well established, to allow a longer burn time.
Hardwoods are preferred to soft woods since the energy content of the wood is relative to its density. Hardwood will give a longer burning time and less frequent refueling. A moisture content of 15 to 20% is recommended. Wood that has been cut and split and left to dry under a cover for a year will usually meet that criterion.
It is better to have small burning blazes than weak slow fires. A good strong start of the fire is essential.

Do not burn scrap or garbage, treated wood or driftwood form the ocean that may contain salt or other chemicals. Salt or chemicals can corrode the fire box and chimney.
Never overheat the fireplace.
Keep your combustion gases between 300 and 500 degrees to get better energy effiency and prevent condensation and creosote formation. A surface thermometer is a good investment.
