Doors and windows may command the architectural style of a home and harmonize with its other elements but must also be durable, weatherproof and safe. All in all, the doors and windows of your home are essential elements which provide comfort and security. This DVD will take a look at several styles of doors and windows. We will see high quality products, all of which are part of leading-edge innovation technologies. We will also show you how to install these units.

As our severe climate dictates, the doors and windows of our homes must meet the highest possible thermal proofing requirements since they will partly warrant our comfort and peace of mind for many years to come. In the next segment, we will take a look at the main elements you must take into account when you purchase new windows. For example, the material used in their making, the type of glass, the design and, of course, the manufacturing process. And of course, we will also see step by step how to replace and install doors, windows, skylights, locks and door knobs.

There are many different types of windows available : casement, louver-board, sliding, architectural or hung windows come with various types of glass: insulated clear glass, low emissive argon glass or ultra low emissive argon glass. Always check the thermal resistance factor of the windows. Obviously, the window with the highest thermal resistance is your best bet. Types of materials also vary : wood, aluminum or PVC. Choose types of windows which harmonize with the style of your house. For instance, mixing wood-based and metal-based windows on the same house is not recommended. One important fact to consider is the projected location of the new windows. In most cases, it will be preferable to put in new windows on the south side of the house. Windows equipped with heat-reflecting glass will prevent summer heat from becoming uncomfortable. On the north side, large windows might affect the energy efficiency of your home. Smaller windows on the north side make a more judicious choice.

As opposed to wood or aluminum, synthetic resin possesses two important advantages: it doesn’t require any maintenance and offers a superior level of thermal insulation and soundproofing. However, the life span and thermal efficiency of synthetic resin windows depend entirely on the quality of the profiles. The many internal sections of the profiles endow the uprights of the frame with a rigidity which increases the thermal efficiency of the window by creating a multitude of small insulation chambers. Windows are usually offered in three popular versions: casement windows, hung windows and sliding windows. The double-action crank on this shutter allows the window to open on a 90-degree angle, making cleaning much easier. Also, there’s no need to strain to open or close the window. To heighten safety measures, you can install a multi-point lock on your casement window. Thanks to its three anchoring points, this high quality lock is not only extremely solid, but it is much more practical than traditional locks since it is operated by a single handle.

To order windows of the right dimension, you must take precise measurements of the opening. Measure the height between the lintel and the top of the window sill. Ideally, measure each individual side in case the frame is crooked. Keep the smallest size. Then measure the width of the window by referring to the casing without the trimming, or moldings. Once again, measure both the top and bottom of the opening in case the frame is crooked. Finally, make sure the frame is straight by comparing the two diagonals. They should be equal in size. Also measure the thickness of the wall by adding the thickness of the interior gypsum and of the exterior wall facing. It is possible to order a custom-made window frame when the casing is not of standard dimensions.

First, start by settling the window in the center of the opening. Make sure the window is well centered. Start by attaching the window by one of its upper corners. Then, adjust the level of the window sill by using cedar shims. Fix the window in the opposite lower corner, and then in the two other corners. (pause) Be careful not to drive the screws in too much. You don’t want to bend the frame. For an impeccable finish, use screw caps. Adjust cedar shims on the upper sides, in the center, then on the lower part of the frame where the screws are. Fill in the gap between the frame and the window with low expansion polyurethane foam. Once it has hardened, cut off the surplus with a utility knife. You can also remove the exceeding part of cedar shims with a utility knife this way.

Proceed as demonstrated in the previous segment for a sliding window. Take the exact measures of the opening by measuring both the height and the width of the frame. Compare the two diagonals to make sure the frame is straight. Settle the window in the center of the opening. Drive the first screw in one of the upper corners. Make sure the window is level and perfectly centered in the opening. If need be, adjust the level of the window using cedar shims. Attach the window by its opposite lower corner. When installing a large window, make sure it is perfectly straight and functional. Note that double sliding windows are equipped with casters for a smooth and durable functioning. Finally, fix the window in the two other corners. Use cedar shims on the upper section and on the sides, this way. You can complete this installation by applying low expansion polyurethane foam.

Adding a patio door is a very profitable improvement project which can completely transform your home. This is an ideal way to give access to a terrace or a balcony. Thanks to its sliding panels, the patio door saves operating space and offers a large glass surface that lets in light. Opt for a superior quality patio door. In fact, a patio door should be a smoothly operating high-range product. It should be designed for exceptional performances, long-term durability and elegance. The patio door seen here possesses: a triple weather-strip on its side rails, three-contact waterproofing on its rail junction, as well as a double 4 mm glass for exceptional resistance and insulation. Thanks to its 1-inch tandem rollers, the patio door offers a smooth and silent running. The doors come in two, three or four panels and are built with lead-free PVC or PVC-coated wood. As for PVC, it offers exceptional resistance to discoloration from exposure to UV rays. According to your tastes, you can choose among a wide range of decorative screens and energy-efficient glass panels. A patio door should have as its main characteristics: A tripe weather-strip which completely eliminates air infiltration. A system of reversible, easily adjustable Vice-Versa shutters. This patio door offers all these advantages and also includes solid, double partition PVC walls. A track groove-cover will prevent dust and debris infiltration. We suggest energy-wise glass and steel-reinforced PVC frames for increased thermal performance. This robust mosquito screen is designed to prevent derailing and jams. The manufacturers also offer a choice of handles: aluminum, brass, with or without key, equipped with a simple mechanism or, for better security, an ultra-resistant multi-point mechanism embedded in galvanized steel.

Installing a patio door is very much like installing a sliding window. In fact, installing a patio door is practically just as simple as putting in a window. The weight of the door can create difficulties when handling though, especially if it is very large and has a triple glass panel. In which case, make sure you are at least two persons to move it around. One last important point : always keep the glass panels of the door closed and locked during its handling and installation. Otherwise, the frame could bend. Also, sliding glass panels can be quite unsafe. To install a patio door, measure the width, height and diagonals of the opening, as you would for a window. If you must widen the opening of the exterior wall, refer to the information pertaining to wall structures provided for the greenhouse window, and seek the advice of an engineer. (pause) You must drill through the PVC frame of the patio door before installing it. Drill ¼-inch-deep holes in the uprights, at the top, on the bottom and in the center of the frame. Making sure the patio door is closed and locked, and settle it into the center of the opening. (pause) Check to see if the doorframe is level with the future wall covering. If the frame is not wide enough, align it with the exterior wall instead. It will be much easier, not to mention much more comely, to blow the frame from the inside if this proves to be necessary. Note that the doors and windows will have to be vertically aligned with the exterior wall even if the wall is not perfectly level. Screw the door in one of its upper corners. Adjust the level of the threshold as needed using cedar shims. Compare the diagonals of the frame to make sure it is straight. If it isn’t, the mechanism and proofing of the patio door will be affected. Once the frame is straightened, drive in the other screws. Check to see if the door opens and closes properly. (pause) Insert cedar shims where the screws are. Cedar shims should be adjusted so as to support the frame without straining. (pause) Finally, cut off the exceeding shims and complete the installation by applying polyurethane foam.

As we already mentioned in the first part of the program, the door and window market has undergone quite a change in the last few years. New, exciting products such as garden doors have emerged. European-style garden doors are high quality products which offer a large glass surface and add a lot of refinement to your home. If you’re considering buying such a door, make sure its glass partition and overall conception are up to standard quality requirements, as we saw earlier on. Its mechanism must be impeccable and its durability, commendable.

These French doors are now essentially made out of PVC. The fruit of much research work, garden doors are built in careful compliance with well-tried methods. Each of their components was tested for sturdiness and energy efficiency. Usually, these doors offer 31% more glass surface than standard models, as well as a solid PVC profiles resistant to damageable UV rays. Make sure the soldered joints were neatly done. Opt for low-conducting spacers, energy-wise, low emissive argon glass and ideally choose metal reinforcement for increased solidity. Finally, the strap hinges should be screwed into metal reinforcements.

Installing a garden door is a slightly more delicate task than putting in a patio door or a conventional door. To install a garden door, measure the opening as shown earlier on. Measure the width of the frame and its height, and then compare the two diagonals. Settle the door in the center of the opening. You can use a crowbar to move the door laterally, inside the opening, so it is properly centered. Vertically align the door with the wall. Use a small square such as this one to determine the thickness of the interior wall covering. Open the door in a 90-degree angle and support it with wood shims of the right size. Set the door into position by screwing it in its upper and center sections, and under the weather strip. Then, adjust the level of the threshold. Drill through the uprights of the PVC frame, on the bottom, in the center and at the top. Insert cedar shims and permanently screw the door in place. Finally, adjust the opening door this way using a crowbar. Complete the installation by applying polyurethane foam.

To liven up your house and fill a room with an extraordinary amount of natural light, opt for a bay window. Start by sawing through the exterior wall facing of the house before cutting the large opening required for the window. You will have to reinforce the wall frame and consider the dimensions of the new opening. A horizontal lintel of the right strength must be installed. For an opening less than 6 feet wide, the lintel will be composed of two 2/6 wood pieces, set side by side. For an 8-feet opening, use 2/8s. For a 10-feet opening, use 2/10s. For a 12-feet opening, use 2/12s, and so on. You may want to call on an engineer to make sure there is sufficient support for this kind of opening. The lintels will be supported by jambs on each side. Concrete is a type of material that is absolutely non-flexible. Here, we put up metal lintels because the house had concrete exterior walls. You must build a floor extension to set up the window. A 2/8 structure anchored in the perimeter joist and supported by 45 degree studs is appropriate.

The opening is finally ready. Be careful when you manipulate these large windows before they are installed. They are generally heavy and fragile. However, this kind of window creates such an impressive change of decor, it is definitely worth the effort. Windows like this not only liven up your interior space by filling the room with an incredible amount of light, they also become one of the main architectural elements of your home.

To handle and secure a bay window, you will need a few helpers. Rent scaffolding material and observe basic safety measures. Use the metal brackets supplied by the manufacturer to attach the window to the walls of the house. The brackets can be easily inserted into the window frame. Attach both window sides and horizontal plates so as to have a bracket every 12 inches. (pause) For high performance insulation and waterproofing, we chose to use polyurethane foam. 0:40

Both protruding and conventional bay windows require some kind of substructure finish. Choose the material that fits best the exterior wall-covering of your house. Here, we chose steel covered with aluminum and zinc. This material requires no maintenance. First of all, you must insulate under the floor extension that supports the window. Thermal resistance must be of at least R27, the same as for a floor over an unheated area. Complete the surface under the window with a steel covering. This type of wall-covering is made with high-quality metal covered by aluminum and zinc. Coated with a modified polyester silicone paint, the wall-covering will be rustproof and will not flake nor stain. It will also last much longer than a similar product made with plastic and aluminum. (pause). Put up a J-shaped molding against the wall, on the window base. Then, install the wall-covering units by fitting them one into the other, and nail them in the upper section. Ideally, you should outfit the window base with a dripstone to prevent water from leaking on the exterior wall-covering. Finally, caulk the joints between the window and the dripstone, as well as all around the window.

Nowadays, current trends in renovation promote new and exciting products. In the case of doors, we’re looking at new and attractive glass panels such as: frosted glass, serigraphy, brass-encased stained-glass, etc. This wide variety of styles and motifs enables you to further personalize your front door. Still, a door must offer great weatherproofing, security and thermal insulation. Choose a steel frame equipped with a triple-action weather-strip system. To increase the door’s resistance to break-ins, you can find on the market a small device such as this one. It consists in a factory-designed steel plate which is embedded in the external face of the frame, at lock level. When the door is locked, the bolt is held by a sturdy metal plate which is solidly fixed to the frame. To order a door of the right size, you must precisely measure the rough opening as we’ve seen earlier on. Traditional cedar shims are not strong enough to hold the frame in place. It must be screwed into position with clamping screws. With this system however, a few minutes is all it takes to firmly anchor the frame in place without using any nails or screws. To level the door, just give a couple of turns to the adjusting screws of the parallels and levelers. Start by fixing the yellow levelers under the door, on each side. The leveling screws must face the inside of the door. Install the yellow and black shims on the sides of the frame. (pause)

This new concept for innovative shims is very practical. Once they are inserted into the frame, installing the door becomes child’s play. Tighten the leveling screws of the shims on the sides of the frame to temporarily attach the door to the opening. If necessary, separate the metal brackets and anchor them in the shims on each side of the door. Settle the door into position and be careful not to scratch the surface. (pause) Perfectly level the door by tightening or loosening the adjusting screws of the levelers this way. Open the door and replace the screw of the top hinge by a longer screw to fix the doorframe to the wall. Then, adjust the other shims on each side and make sure the door is properly centered in the opening. Now, replace one of the screws in the bottom hinge. (pause) Check one last time to see if the door is level and centered in the opening. Insert the plastic shims specifically designed for this purpose at handle level, between the frame and the wall. Finally screw the door in permanently using the metal brackets.

They outmatch conventional norms for aestheticism, weatherproofing, solidity, easy handling and maintenance. Unscrew and remove the inside window frame of the door. A clean and uniform sealant will weatherproof the window and prevent air and water from seeping between the frame and the door. This kind of window installation is very simple and allows any home renovation amateur to change the look of his - or her - steel door, all the while letting more light filter inside. Two people are needed for this job. Start by setting the door window in the opening and replace the interior frame. Screw the frame into position with screws designed for this purpose. Don’t tighten the screws too much : you could damage the glass. Finally, check to see if the door opens and closes properly.

Don’t tighten the screws too much : you could damage the glass. Finally, check to see if the door opens and closes properly.

To get a personal and quick access to your home, just enter your personal access code in the no-key, electronic dead-bolt lock. This type of lock is easy to install. Use the pattern supplied to determine the location and dimension of the opening you’ll need. The lock adjusts by a simple rotation depending on the position of the opening in the door. Insert the dead-bolt lock in the top opening of the door and mark off its contours. Use a wood chisel to cut off a 4 mm-deep opening and insert the dead-bolt lock. Use a soft lead pencil or lipstick to mark the center of the dead-bolt, then match this on the doorframe. (pause) Drill a hole, 1-inch in diameter and 1¼-inch in depth, on this spot. Now, put in the control dial on the door. In the case of a steel door, pre-drill the screw holes. Then, install the cylinder and the inside metal plate. You can now put in the electronic circuit. Connect the dial and screw the circuit in place on the inside metal plate. If need be, you can change the direction of the dead-bolt simply by inverting the wire of the motor, depending on which side the lock is installed. The electronic lock works with four standard batteries. It allows you to decide on a code from the inside of the house, and to change it as often as possible. You can also provide a neighbor or a cleaning team with a temporary code. With this new dead-bolt lock, you just need to enter your personal access code to unlock the door. This is especially practical if you’ve locked yourself out during the wintertime and your keys are still in your car, motor running and doors locked, mind you. Then again, maybe you’re tired of going out for a jog and carrying that heavy set of keys. With this new dead-bolt lock, we installed a nice solid brass door handle. Installing a handle on a pre-drilled steel door is a pretty simple, straightforward job.

A complete range of brass door handles guaranteed for life can enhance and refine the look of your house. With these products, changing your old door handles is as quick as it is easy. Mark the location of the center of the lock on the frame and drill a proper-size hole, like this. Screw the striking plate in place, and the installation is complete. Finally, complete the door installation by applying foam under the threshold and all around the frame.

Don’t worry about skylights causing water infiltration. As you will see in the next « So You’re Renovating! » segment, the two most important aspects of skylight installation are waterproofing and insulation. Making sure a skylight is waterproof is very important, especially in the case of a low slope roof. A low slope roof promotes snow, ice and water accumulation around the skylight. Self-adhesive membrane strips must absolutely be installed around the shaft to prevent all possible water infiltration.

Start by removing the roofing material around the skylight. On the sides, use the brackets specifically designed for this purpose. Set the skylight into position and apply exterior primer on the sides and on the roof protection underlayment if need be. Self-adhesive membrane strips are required for a perfect, waterproof end-result. This type of membrane is particularly effective; made from an elastomeric bitumen base, the self-adhesive membrane is part of a new generation of high performing, top-quality waterproofing products. Every angle must be covered with a gusset, a small membrane piece just like this one. Note that this type of membrane is available at your local retailer. Cut a membrane strip and set it into position. Fold half of the protection sheet over on itself. Stick the membrane on the base of the skylight. Press on the membrane with a small rubber roller for maximum adherence. Glue the other membrane strips on each side of the skylight using the same technique. Adjust the corners this way. Then, replace the asphalt shingles right up to the base of the skylight and flash the down-roof side. Alternate flashing with shingles up both sloped sides.

In the case where two skylights are side-by-side, apply a gutter-shaped membrane strip this way. Cut through the protection sheet as shown and set the membrane into position between the two skylights. Adjust the corners. Apply the last membrane strip across the top of the skylights. Insert the metal piece to join the two down-roof side flashing units. Then, set the gutter between the two skylights. Install the two flashing units across the top and insert the metal piece to join them. For perfect protection, apply a membrane strip on the backside of the upper flashing units. Once the flashing is secured around the skylights, you can complete the shingle installation. The sides of the shaft that go through the attic will have to be well insulated. Once inside the house, make sure the shafts are completely watertight by installing rigid insulation panels and a sealed vapor barrier.

As you just saw, insulating around the skylight is very important. You must properly insulate the attic or cathedral-style ceiling to prevent condensation problems. Then, install a perfectly watertight vapor barrier around the skylight. Some skylights are equipped with many kinds of very interesting accessories such as remote-control motorized blinds. These additions can help you enjoy as much natural light as you desire.

Many manufacturers now offer optional sunscreens for improved control over temperature, lighting and privacy. When they are beyond reach, sunscreens and open-skylights can easily be closed or opened with an adjustment rod or electric controls. Open-skylights include a wood frame and casing for a nicer look. These skylights can be outfitted with screens, and aluminum or copper facings. They come in a wide range of insulating glass: clear tempered glass, low emission argon-injected glass, and laminated glass for energy-wise, all-weather water-resistance.

Here you go, you just saw how to install doors , windows and skylights. These elements of your house are expensive but the added value on your house easily justifies the expenses. Furthermore, if you go for energy efficiency units, you will be surprise how much you can save on your heating and air conditioning bills.
